A patch for an English fan translation of the Japan-only DS game GameCenter CX: Arino no Chōsenjō 2 has just been released, and can be downloaded from the website gccxpatch.com.
The original GameCenter CX video game was officially localized and released in North America by XSEED Games in 2009 under the title Retro Game Challenge. Unfortunately, due to an expensive localization process and extremely low sales, XSEED all but shut the door on bringing over the sequel. Last year, a group of dedicated fans took up the task of translating the game themselves, and following XSEED’s example, have called it Retro Game Challenge 2. Both games feature several full games that recreate the look and feel of classic games from the NES, SNES and Game Boy.
The game is based on the popular Japanese TV show GameCenter CX in which comedian Shinya Arino is challenged to play and beat numerous classic games. Its unique combination of suspense and humor has gained it a cult following all over the world, although it has only had one official English release in a DVD set titled Retro Game Master: The GameCenter CX Collection from DiscoTek Media. However, most episodes of the show have been fan translated, and some can be found right here on The Punk Effect, with more available at sa-gccx.com.
A third game was released in Japan for the 3DS earlier this year, but once again, its chances of localization look extremely slim.
